Should I buy a skid steer or a mini excavator for digging?
Buy a skid steer if most of the work is moving, levelling and loading material, with lighter digging such as shallow trenches in soft ground. Buy a mini excavator if digging is the main job, since it digs deeper and faster in hard ground. DJJ sells the Yuchai S35 Pro and S35 Max electric skid steers and Yuchai mini excavators, but does not hire either, so tell us the jobs and hours and we will help you choose.
How long does the S35 Pro run on a charge?
The S35 Pro has a 90-minute quick charge for up to 8 hours of operation. Real run time depends on the work, attachments and conditions, so tell us your daily hours and tasks and we can check it against your duty cycle.
What is the difference between the S35 Pro and S35 Max?
Both are battery electric with a 0.35 t rated operating capacity, 17 kW combined power and a 0.29 cubic metre bucket. The S35 Pro has a 1.5 t operating weight and the S35 Max 1.6 t, and the S35 Max carries a 5-year battery warranty.
Is a skid steer the same thing as a bobcat?
Yes, in everyday Australian use. Many people call any skid steer a bobcat, after the brand that built the first skid steers, but the S35 Pro and S35 Max sold by DJJ are Yuchai machines.
Do I need a licence to operate a skid steer?
A skid steer is not a forklift, so the forklift LF licence does not apply, but operators still need training and the business must manage the risk under WHS law. Confirm requirements with your state regulator.
Can an electric skid steer work indoors or near people?
A battery electric skid steer produces no exhaust at the machine, which makes it better suited than diesel to enclosed spaces. Ground or floor conditions, site traffic rules and keeping people clear still apply, so tell us about the site before choosing.
