Sizing a wheel loader: rated load, bucket and dump height
Size a wheel loader by its rated load, not its operating weight. The rated load is what the loader is designed to carry in the bucket, and the bucket volume times the weight of your material has to sit inside it. Loose gravel weighs roughly 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre, so a full 1.0 m³ bucket on the LM938 stays inside its 2,000 kg rating, while a heaped bucket of wet clay can come close to it. Then check the dump height against the side of the trucks, bins or hoppers you load, with some clearance to spare.
LM920 or LM930?
The LM920 and LM930 share the same 3,800 kg operating weight, 1,600 kg rated load and 0.8 m³ bucket. The difference is the engine: 42 kW on the LM920 and 65 kW on the LM930. The extra power helps when you dig into hard stockpiles, push into heavy material or work on slopes all day, while the LM920 suits lighter yard and farm work.
Buckets, forks and grapples
A general-purpose bucket handles most loose material, but a wheel loader can also run pallet forks, grapples and other tools on a suitable coupler. Check the attachment's weight against the loader's rated load, because a heavier attachment leaves less capacity for the load. Licences, training and road use
No high risk work licence class covers wheel loaders, so there is no loader licence card like the LF forklift licence. The business still has to make sure every operator is trained and competent for the machine and the site, and many principal contractors ask for a recognised training unit or a verification of competency. A wheel loader that travels on public roads also needs the right registration, which varies by state, so check with your state transport authority before driving one on the road.
