To choose a wheel loader for sale in Western Australia (WA), start with the heaviest material you move and the trucks or bins you load, then check how the machine will get to your site, whether it's set up for WA heat and dust, and where it will be serviced. Choose the size by the material and the trucks you load
A wheel loader's size should come from the weight in the bucket and the height it has to reach, not the engine power. Under ISO 14397-1, the rated operating load is 50% of the tipping load with the loader turned to full articulation, so a machine rated at 2 t carries 2 t safely in the bucket and no more. A bucket of wet soil or gravel weighs far more than the same bucket of grain, mulch or woodchips, so match the bucket size to your heaviest material.

Buying a used loader in WA

Check the ROPS and FOPS compliance plate on the cab. It should be legible and match the machine. A structurally damaged protective structure takes the machine out of service until it's repaired and re-certified, and a ROPS must never be moved from one machine to another. Search the serial number on the PPSR for money owing, then work through a full used wheel loader inspection before you agree on a price.
Getting the loader to your site in WA
Western Australia runs its own heavy vehicle rules rather than the national NHVR scheme, so Main Roads WA and the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure are the agencies that matter. Most buyers move a loader on a float, and a load wider than 2.5 m, higher than 4.3 m or longer than 19 m as a combination needs a Main Roads permit.
Driving a loader on a public road needs a special purpose vehicle licence or a Department of Transport permit. Front-end loaders don't qualify for the concession that covers skid steers, so check the special purpose vehicle rules and the driver licence you need before you take one on the road.
Operator tickets and safety in WA
WA's Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and its 2022 regulations apply to loaders on farms, construction sites and mines, and WorkSafe WA is the regulator. The national unit is RIIMPO321F (Conduct civil construction wheeled front end loader operations), or its current version.
One WA rule catches loader owners out. Since 10 August 2025, using earthmoving machinery with a safe working load over 3 t to suspend a load, like a crane, needs a CN licence for a non-slewing machine such as a loader.
