Can electric forklifts be used outdoors or in the rain?

In this article

Yes, electric forklifts can be used outdoors, but only some can be used in the rain, and the model's water rating and manual decide which. Hangcha rates its XC, XE and XH Series trucks at IPX4, which covers splashing water, not standing water or flooding. Even so, Hangcha's XH and rough terrain manuals rule out lightning and torrential rain, and forbid parking in the rain.

Which electric forklifts can work outdoors in wet weather?

An electric forklift suits wet outdoor work when its maker publishes a water rating for the whole truck and the manual allows that work. The battery itself tells you nothing, because some electric trucks are built for yards and others for dry warehouse floors. DJJ Equipment sells Hangcha electric forklifts, and this is what the brochures and product data show:

Hangcha rangePublished water protectionOutdoor fit
XC Series 1.5-3.8 t, 4-5 t, 6-10 tTruck rated IPX4Paved yards and mixed indoor and outdoor work
XE Series 1.5-3.8 t, 4-5 t, 6-10 tTruck rated IPX4Yards, with engine-forklift axles and tyres on the 1.5-3.8 t models
XH Series 2-3.8 t up to 38-48 tBody IPX4; motors, controls and high-voltage parts IP67Heavy outdoor work that usually goes to engine trucks
High-voltage lithium rough terrain 2.5-3.5 tMain high-voltage parts IP67, waterproof connectorsGravel and unsealed yards

No published rating doesn't mean a truck fails in a shower. It means you have nothing in writing that says it won't, so get an answer before you plan wet work around it. Watch for part ratings too: the WS Series pallet stacker's IP67 rating belongs to its connectors, not the whole machine.

What does IPX4 mean on an electric forklift?

IPX4 on an electric forklift means water splashed at the truck from any direction shouldn't do harm in a set test. The IP code comes from the IEC standard. Its first number rates solid objects from 0 to 6, and its second rates liquids from 0 to 9, while an X means the first number wasn't rated.

The test runs for minutes, not a wet season, and it's splash rather than a pressure wash or a flooded yard. IP67 goes further, covering dust and temporary immersion up to 1 m for 30 minutes, but on an XH Series truck it applies to the motors, controls and high-voltage parts. The body stays at IPX4, and Hangcha's XH manuals say not to put the battery pack in water. An IP67 motor doesn't turn the truck into something you can drive through floodwater.

Can you use an electric forklift in heavy rain?

No, an electric forklift should stop for lightning and torrential rain, whatever its rating. The Hangcha manuals for the XH Series 4-5 t and the lithium rough terrain forklift both say not to use the truck during sandstorms, snowfall, lightning, torrential rain or typhoons.

Some manuals go further. The one for the XH Series 2-3.8 t, dated 2021, lists rain itself with sand, snow, lightning and wind, even though the truck carries IPX4.

That manual also sets the conditions the truck is designed for: wind up to 5 m/s, about 18 km/h, and temperatures from -20 to 40 degrees C. That's an ordinary breezy day in an open yard, so check the limit even when the rain holds off.

Marketing reads more boldly. Hangcha describes the IPX4 rating on the XE Series 1.5-3.8 t as enough to resist rainstorms. A brochure sells the truck and a manual sets its limits, so follow the manual that came with your machine. If it's silent or unclear on your conditions, ask for the answer in writing.

Can an electric forklift be parked outside in the rain?

No, the Hangcha XH and rough terrain manuals forbid parking an electric forklift in rain or a damp environment. Give the truck a covered spot before the first shift. WorkSafe Queensland also wants forklift parking well lit and not muddy, slippery or uneven.

Longer gaps need more care. Hangcha's XH manuals set battery storage humidity at 70% or less, so forklift long term storage belongs in a dry building rather than under a tarp.

Can you charge an electric forklift outside or in the rain?

No, don't charge an electric forklift in the open rain. Hangcha's XH Series 2-3.8 t manual says to charge the battery in a well-ventilated, dry environment, and it applies that to the charger as well: keep it dry and away from direct sun, wind and rain.

The chargers show why. One charger in that manual, the SLC-350100 at up to 36 kW, is rated only IP21, which allows for dripping water and little else. The separate fast charger is IP54 and can be installed outdoors, but the manual still calls for a canopy above it. Before you buy, work out where the truck will park to charge, whether a roof covers the charger and the plug-in point, and how far the truck has to travel to reach it.

How does wet ground change electric forklift work?

Wet ground cuts an electric forklift's grip and braking, and the change between surfaces catches drivers out. WorkSafe Queensland warns that driving from wet to dry, or dry to wet, affects tyre traction, braking and stability, and says ramps must have good traction in wet weather. Safe Work Australia's guide says to slow down on a sloping, uneven or wet surface, and notes that under-inflated tyres can reduce stability.

Tyres decide a lot of this. The X Series 1-3.5 t and XA Series run on pneumatic tyres, while the XC Series 6-10 t runs on solid tyres with the same IPX4 as the smaller XC trucks, so a water rating tells you nothing about grip. Walk the whole route in the wet before you choose: the dock plate, the painted lines, the ramp, the crossfall and any low spot that holds water. Rain also cuts what drivers and pedestrians can see, so working lights belong on the pre-start check.

If that walk ends on gravel or an unsealed yard, a warehouse-style truck is the wrong tool whatever its rating. Hangcha's high-voltage lithium rough terrain forklifts carry deep-tread tyres, wet brakes, a differential lock and 225-290 mm of ground clearance. Ground slope and soft ground still limit them.

What should you do after an electric forklift gets wet or flooded?

A wet electric forklift needs drying and a look over, not a hose. Hangcha's XH manuals say not to flush the battery system or the motor casing with water, and to clean the radiator's outer surface without flushing it. So clean these areas by hand or with a method your service technician approves, and report any new fault code rather than clearing it and carrying on.

Floodwater is different. Treat a forklift that has stood in it as out of service and don't power it up. Hangcha's manuals name flood as a reason to cut the high-voltage circuit with the manual service disconnect on XH and rough terrain trucks, then wait 15-20 minutes, and that job belongs to someone trained on the truck. When is an LPG or diesel forklift the better outdoor choice?

An LPG or diesel forklift is usually the better choice when the truck spends its day outdoors on a site with no covered place to charge. Diesel is normally an outdoor machine, and refuelling doesn't need the roof, the switchboard capacity and the charging breaks an electric truck does. Hangcha also lists a rainproof cover for its A Series diesel and LPG trucks.

Engines don't change the ground, though. An LPG or diesel truck loses grip on the same wet ramp, and exhaust still limits where it can go indoors. If the truck moves in and out of a building all day, a rated electric forklift often fits better, and the wider electric vs LPG forklift trade-off covers running cost and servicing.

Tell us what the truck will drive over, how high it lifts, how long it stays outside and where it would charge, and we'll check the model's rating and manual limits against that work. Call 1800 355 388 or send an enquiry to your nearest DJJ branch in Sydney, Brisbane or Perth.
