Battery electric forklifts produce no exhaust emissions and run far quieter than combustion machines, which is what makes them usable inside enclosed warehouses, cold stores and food sites. Our electric range covers 0.6 tonne through to 48 tonne, so the technology is no longer limited to light indoor duty.

The main decision is battery chemistry. Lithium ion charges opportunistically during breaks and needs no watering or battery change room, which suits multi shift operations. Lead acid costs less to buy and still works well for single shift sites with a charging bay. Check the charger supply available at your site, since fast charging can need a three phase connection.

Before you choose, check:

• Lithium ion for multi shift work and opportunity charging
• Lead acid where a single shift and an existing charge bay are enough
• Available power supply, including whether three phase is on site
• Cold store specification if the machine works below zero
• Run time per charge against your real duty cycle, not a rated figure
