Container handling equipment covers every machine that moves shipping containers or works inside them: reach stackers for laden boxes, empty container handlers for stacking empties, and forklifts built to load and unload inside a container. Three jobs, three types of machine

• Container reach stackers lift laden 20 ft and 40 ft containers with a telescopic boom, at 45 tonnes in the first row and 31 and 16 tonnes in the second and third rows.
• Empty container handlers lift empties from the top on a tall mast and stack them 3 to 8 high, at 6 to 9 tonnes.
• The X Series Container / Low-Profile IC Forklift works inside the container, with a 2,240 mm overhead guard and 5 to 10 tonnes capacity.
• The XF Series Box Car Cushion Forklift loads enclosed bodies such as rail box cars and containers, at 3.5 to 5.5 tonnes.

Laden or empty containers?

Start with what you move. A laden 40 ft container can weigh well over 20 tonnes, which only a reach stacker in this range can handle. An empty container handler is rated for empties only, so it is a much lighter machine that stacks empties higher, but it must never lift a laden box. Many yards run both: the reach stacker on laden boxes and the empty container handler in the empty park.

If the work is inside the container, stacking a machine at the door is the wrong approach. A low-profile container forklift drives into the box to load or unload pallets, so check the door height, the mast lowered height and the free lift before you choose one.

Diesel or high-voltage lithium

Both the reach stacker and the empty container handler come in a Hangcha XH Series high-voltage lithium version, with batteries of 423 kWh and, on one reach stacker, 560 kWh. They produce no exhaust in the yard, but they need a charging plan and a site power supply to match. The X Series diesel machines use Volvo, Cummins or Yuchai engines, with Stage V versions available on selected models.

Yard, pavement and licences

These are heavy machines: the empty container handlers weigh about 24 to 45 tonnes in service and the reach stackers about 72 to 74 tonnes, so check pavement strength, turning space and workshop door heights before you buy. A reach stacker of more than 3 tonnes capacity with a container attachment needs a high risk work licence in class RS in NSW, Queensland and WA. No regulator names a licence class for empty container handlers, so confirm the requirement with your state regulator, and in-container forklifts need a class LF licence.

Most of the reach stackers and empty container handlers show a 24 month or 4,000 hour warranty on the product page, and every machine we sell gets a pre-delivery inspection before it leaves us.
