High reach forklifts for sale: choosing a reach truck
A high reach forklift, usually called a reach truck, lifts pallets into tall racking in aisles far narrower than a counterbalance forklift needs. Its forks or mast reach forward to pick up or place the load, then pull back over the support legs to travel. DJJ Equipment sells Hangcha reach trucks from 1 to 2.5 tonnes with lift heights up to 13 m, 4-way and all-directional reach trucks up to 3 tonnes for long loads, and turret and man-up VNA trucks for very narrow aisles up to 14.7 m.
Reach trucks, 4-way and VNA trucks in our range
Capacities and lift heights below come from each model's specifications. The capacity you can actually lift at your top beam is lower, so always check the load chart for the mast you choose.

Capacity at height: read the load chart
A reach truck's rated capacity applies at its rated load centre and a lower lift height. As the forks go higher, and as the load sits further out, the safe capacity falls. The data plate and load chart for the exact mast you order are the only reliable guide, so give us your heaviest pallet and your top beam height and we will match the model and mast to them.
Aisle width and racking
A typical reach truck needs a right-angle stacking aisle of roughly 2.6 to 2.9 m, against about 3.9 to 4.1 m for a 2.5 tonne counterbalance forklift. The exact figure depends on the model, the pallet size and the clearance you allow. Turret and man-up VNA trucks work in narrower aisles again, but the minimum aisle width for those is set project by project, together with the racking and floor.
Stand-on, pantograph, 4-way or turret?
A stand-on reach truck moves its mast forward and suits single-deep racking with standard pallets. A pantograph reach truck extends its forks on a scissor mechanism, which lets it reach further into the racking. A 4-way or all-directional reach truck can also travel sideways, so it carries long loads such as timber, pipe and steel lengthways down an aisle. A turret truck rotates its forks to place pallets on either side of a very narrow aisle without turning the truck, and on a man-up model the operator rises with the load to pick at height.
Floors, outdoors and cold stores
Reach trucks are built for smooth, level indoor floors. They are not designed for yards, rough concrete or loading trucks at a dock, which is work for counterbalance forklifts. VNA trucks need flat floors to tight tolerances, so floor flatness is part of the project. For freezer rooms, Hangcha rates its A Series F2 reach trucks down to minus 30 degrees and offers a cold storage option on the XC Series, so ask for these versions by name.
Lithium or lead-acid battery?
Most reach trucks in our range run on lithium-ion, which suits multi-shift warehouses because you can top it up at breaks. Lead-acid is offered on selected models, such as the A Series 1.2-2 t and the 4-way trucks, and suits a single shift with a full overnight charge, with regular watering and a ventilated charging area. Either way, use the charger specified for the battery.
Licences for reach trucks and VNA trucks
Operators of reach trucks and man-down turret trucks need a high risk work licence in class LF. Where the operator's controls rise with the load, as on a man-up VNA truck, the licence class is LO. Licences are issued by your state regulator after training and assessment through a registered training organisation.
Buy or hire a reach truck
DJJ Equipment sells new Hangcha reach trucks and also offers forklift hire on selected reach truck models. Availability varies by location and term, and minimum hire terms depend on the machine and branch.
Service, parts and support
Every machine we sell gets a pre-delivery inspection before it leaves us. Warranty terms are listed on each product page, for example 24 months or 2,000 hours on most Hangcha reach trucks. Servicing, repairs and parts come from our branches in Silverwater, Meadowbrook and Bayswater, with on-site service in selected areas, subject to technician availability.
Before you choose, check:
- Your heaviest pallet and the height of your top beam
- Aisle width between racking, and the pallet size
- Floor condition and flatness
- Whether you handle long loads that need a 4-way truck
- Shifts per day and where the truck will charge
Tell us your racking height, aisle width, pallet size and how many hours a day you run, and our team will recommend a reach truck to buy or hire. Call 1800 355 388 or send an enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you speak with the team.
Do reach truck operators need an LF or LO licence?
A reach truck is a forklift truck, so operators need a High Risk Work Licence in class LF. A man-up turret truck or stock picker, where the operator rises with the load, is an LO machine instead. Confirm current requirements with SafeWork NSW, WorkSafe Queensland, WorkSafe WA or your state regulator.
How wide does an aisle need to be for a reach truck?
As a DJJ rule of thumb, plan for roughly the pallet length plus about 1,200 mm. Then confirm against the stacking aisle figure in the specification table of the exact model, since mast type, pantograph or reach design and pallet size all change the answer.
Can a reach truck be used outdoors or on rough concrete?
No. Reach trucks are built for smooth, level indoor floors, and uneven ground or broken joints affect stability, especially with the mast extended. If loads also have to cross a yard or loading area, a counterbalance forklift for the outside work is usually the practical answer.
Lithium or lead-acid: which battery suits a reach truck?
Some models, such as the Hangcha A Series reach trucks, offer lead-acid or lithium options. Lithium suits multi-shift work with opportunity charging and needs little battery maintenance, while lead-acid costs less to buy but needs watering, a charging area and full charge cycles. Your shift pattern usually decides it.
Is a high reach forklift the right buy for my warehouse?
A high reach forklift, or reach truck, suits warehouses that stack pallets into high racking on smooth indoor floors: its mast or forks reach forward to pick a pallet, then pull back so it turns in narrow aisles. If loads also cross a yard, ramps or a dock, a counterbalance forklift is usually the better buy, and many sites run both.
What mast heights are offered on these reach trucks?
The highest mast offered varies by model, from 7 m on several A and XC Series units to 12.5 m on the A Series 1-2 t and 13 m on the XC Series 1.4-2.5 t reach truck. Standard masts are often lower, so state the height you need when you ask for a quote.
