Electric forklifts for sale: choosing the right model
An electric forklift runs on a battery instead of LPG or diesel, so it produces no exhaust at the point of use and runs much quieter. That makes it the usual choice for warehouses, cold stores, food sites and any building where fumes and noise matter. DJJ Equipment sells Hangcha electric forklifts from 0.6 to 48 tonnes, from compact 3-wheel trucks for tight aisles to high-voltage lithium machines for steel and precast yards.

3-wheel or 4-wheel electric forklift?
A 3-wheel electric forklift turns in a tighter circle, which helps in narrow aisles, small stores and on trailer decks. Our 3-wheel models cover 0.6 to 2.3 tonnes. A 4-wheel forklift is the more stable choice for ramps, heavier loads, longer shifts and work that moves between the warehouse and the yard, and our 4-wheel range runs from 1 to 48 tonnes.
Lithium or lead-acid battery?
Most Hangcha electric forklifts in our range run on lithium-ion batteries. Lithium suits multi-shift work, because you can top it up at breaks instead of waiting for a full charge, and the battery needs little day-to-day attention. Lead-acid costs less to buy and suits a single shift with a full overnight charge, but it needs regular watering and a ventilated charging area. Lead-acid is offered on selected X Series models and on XH models from 4 tonnes, so check the battery options on each product page.
Whichever battery you choose, it still needs the correct charger and a battery management system working as designed. Ask us which battery option is available for the model and capacity you need.
Charging and power supply
Check where the forklift will charge before you buy. You need a suitable power supply at the charging point, space to park the forklift while it charges, and for lead-acid a ventilated area. Larger high-voltage lithium forklifts can need a dedicated charger installation, so tell us your site power when you ask for a quote.
Indoors, outdoors and cold stores
Electric forklifts are at home on smooth indoor floors and sealed yards. Check the tyres, ground clearance and water protection before using one outdoors on uneven or wet ground, and on unsealed sites a rough terrain forklift is the safer choice. Because they produce no exhaust, electric forklifts are the usual choice for cold stores and enclosed areas. Ask about cold store specifications for the model you are considering.
Explosion-proof forklifts for hazardous areas
Standard forklifts must not be used where flammable gas, vapour or dust may be present. For those sites we offer the Hangcha XE Series explosion-proof forklift. The hazardous area zone and the certification required depend on your site, so confirm them with your safety adviser before you order.
Buy or hire an electric forklift
DJJ Equipment sells new Hangcha electric forklifts and also offers forklift hire on selected electric models. Availability varies by location and term, and minimum hire terms depend on the machine and branch.
Service, parts and support
Every machine we sell gets a pre-delivery inspection before it leaves us. Warranty terms are listed on each product page, for example 24 months or 2,000 hours on most Hangcha forklifts. Servicing, repairs and parts come from our branches in Silverwater, Meadowbrook and Bayswater, with on-site service in selected areas, subject to technician availability.
Before you choose, check:
- Your heaviest load and the lift height you need
- Aisle width and turning space
- Floor or yard surface, ramps and slopes
- Hours of use per day and when the forklift can charge
- Power supply at the charging point
Tell us the load weight, lift height, operating environment and how many hours a day you run, and our team will recommend suitable options to buy or hire. Call 1800 355 388 or send an enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you speak with the team.
Do I need a licence to drive an electric forklift?
Yes. A ride-on electric counterbalance forklift is a forklift truck, so the operator needs a High Risk Work Licence class LF, trained through a Registered Training Organisation and issued by the state regulator. Check current requirements with SafeWork NSW, WorkSafe Queensland or WorkSafe WA, depending on where the machine works.
How much does it cost to charge an electric forklift each shift?
DJJ's estimate, based on Sydney figures, is about $7 a shift to charge compared with about $40-70 a shift for LPG or diesel. The real figure depends on your usage, power tariff and fuel prices, so treat it as a guide rather than a quote.
Can an electric forklift work outdoors in a yard as well?
Some can. Several Hangcha series, including units in the XA, XC, XE and XH ranges, are rated for indoor and outdoor work, while others are built for warehouse floors. Check the rating on the product page and tell us about your yard surface before choosing.
Does rated capacity change at higher lift heights or with attachments?
Yes. Rated capacity is only true at the stated load centre and lift height, and it falls at higher lifts or when an attachment such as a side shifter or clamp is fitted. Australian ratings commonly use a 600 mm load centre while many imported spec sheets use 500 mm, so check the data plate and load chart.
How much does a new electric forklift cost?
A new 2.5 to 3 t electric counterbalance forklift typically costs from the low $20,000s to about $65,000 in Australia, based on market prices as at October 2026, with sources quoting GST differently. Small 3-wheel units sit lower, at about $22,000 to $50,000, and 4 to 5 t machines run to about $70,000 to $95,000 or more. DJJ's current offers are on the promotions page.
Can I fit a smaller or cheaper battery to save money?
No. On an electric counterbalance forklift the battery is part of the counterweight, so a lighter or smaller battery can upset the balance the rated capacity depends on. Replace it with the battery specified for that model, and ask our service team if you are unsure.
